Will you now wake up?

The enemy has come back around
He is no longer a memory recorded in your history books
Or a story that your grandfather told you
The enemy is right at your doorsteps
He is within your walls
He is sitting at your dinner table
The enemy is no longer at the gates
He is no longer a distant idea
He is inside the village
On your streets
At the town square
In your public libraries
In your universities
In your home
And you brought him here
You invited him to sit at your table
And to share your meal
You took your freedoms for granted
Forgot the labour of those who came before you
Their sacrifices of blood and sweat and torture;
some still disappeared and declared dead without a body to bury
The enemy has come back around
Will you now wake up?
Or will you throw the enemy a welcome party
As he trashes your living room
And throws the furniture through the windows
And digs up your garden
And strangles your children
And beats your wife
And kills you
And sets your house on fire?
Will your now wake up?
